THE ADEQUATE SPARROW
I challenge you:
possibly the most
familiar of all
wild birds.
Though you are
lacking in color
and your song
is unremarkable—
your smooth feathers,
your adaptability,
your familiarity
frequently paints you
as a representative
of the common,
the vulgar, the lewd—
or divine providence.
I challenge you:
fly, fly away.
Be a sparrow;
an adequate sparrow.
possibly the most
familiar of all
wild birds.
Though you are
lacking in color
and your song
is unremarkable—
your smooth feathers,
your adaptability,
your familiarity
frequently paints you
as a representative
of the common,
the vulgar, the lewd—
or divine providence.
I challenge you:
fly, fly away.
Be a sparrow;
an adequate sparrow.
