THE ADEQUATE SPARROW

I challenge you:
possibly the most
familiar of all
wild birds.

Though you are
lacking in color
and your song
is unremarkable—

your smooth feathers,
your adaptability,
your familiarity
frequently paints you

as a representative
of the common,
the vulgar, the lewd—
or divine providence.

I challenge you:
fly, fly away.
Be a sparrow;
an adequate sparrow.
